Immigration
Florida Citrus Mutual worked hard on getting a comprehensive immigration reform bill through Congress in 2007. Unfortunately it did not happen but the issue is not going to go away and will probably dominate the agenda of any incoming presidential administration. Mutual believes any immigration reform must contain an effective guest worker program that brings workers in, keeps track of the workers while they are here, and then sends them home when the season is over.
The issue is not about illegal immigrants or immigration – it is a business and economics problem. The Florida citrus industry just like the service, construction and restaurant industries wants legal workers. The last thing that a citrus grower wants to keeping him awake at night is wondering about the legal status of his workforce. They have plenty of other things to worry about with weather, plant pests & diseases, and energy costs.
