Congressman Vern Buchanan

Congressman Vern Buchanan

Republican Congressman Vern Buchanan represents Florida’s 16th District which covers western Manatee and Sarasota counties. Congressman Buchanan was first elected in 2007 after a very successful career in the private sector. He was in business for more than 30 years and served as the chairman of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and the Florida State Chamber of Commerce. He also was on the executive committee of the United States Chamber of Commerce.

U.S. Rep. Buchanan is the only Florida member of Congress to sit on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax policy, international trade, health care and Social Security. Buchanan has worked tirelessly to enact tax incentives to help small businesses, end burdensome regulations, and limit frivolous lawsuits. He is an outspoken advocate of reforming the U.S. tax code to make it simpler and fairer.

On the citrus front, Buchanan was at the forefront of the effort to create a dedicated source of citrus research funding. He was lead sponsor on HR 853 which would have created the Citrus Research Trust Fund through the tariff on importuned citrus products. In this role he helped get every single House delegation member to sign on as a co-sponsor of the bill. What an amazing bi-partisan accomplishment! When that effort lost some momentum, Buchanan shifted his tactics and led the charge on incorporating the citrus research initiative into the Farm Bill. The move resulted in $125 million over the next five years for citrus disease research. We truly owe Congressman Buchanan a sincere thank you for his leadership on behalf of the Florida citrus industry. Without Congressman Buchanan the funding does not happen.

In November, the Congressman will run for his fifth term against the winner of the Democratic primary where two candidates are vying for the spot. We feel confident his constituents will recognize all that he does for the 16th District and send him back to Washington, D.C. We encourage the entire citrus industry to support Vern.
