Congressional Spotlight - Tom Rooney

Congressman Tom Rooney

Representing the 17th District of Florida, Congressman Tom Rooney is the unquestioned top supporter of citrus in Congress. His District contains more citrus acreage than anyone in Washington and he clearly is proud to serve the people of Florida’s citrus belt. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Rooney was instrumental in pushing through the Farm Bill and its $125 million for citrus research over the next five years. But Rooney’s work didn’t end there. He also helped secure another $125 million in discretionary citrus research funding that will supplement the Farm Bill money as needed.

In addition to the Appropriations Committee, Rooney sits on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Plus, he serves as a Deputy Whip for the Majority. This Philadelphia born, but Florida raised Congressman, attended Syracuse University and Washington and Jefferson College where he played football and earned his B.A. in English Literature. Shortly after, he returned to the sunshine state and received his M.A. in Political Science from the University of Florida. He went on to receive his J.D. at the University Of Miami School Of Law.

Rooney’s military career began shortly after. He joined the U.S. Army JAG Corps and spent over four years on active duty. Most notably he served as Special Assistant U.S. Attorney on Fort Hood, TX prosecuting all civilian crimes on post. In 2002, Tom was selected to teach Constitutional and Criminal Law at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Rooney’s support of veterans and the military is well known throughout Congress.

Tom and his wife Tara live in Okeechobee with their three young sons: Tommy Jr., Sean, and Seamus.

In November, Mutual encourages you to vote for Rooney. There really is no other choice. Losing Tom as a member of Congress would be a huge blow not only to agriculture, but all of Florida. His leadership is unparalleled and Florida Citrus Mutual appreciates all he does for our industry.
