Feds to release final Fla. citrus forecast
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture is scheduled to release its final forecast for Florida’s citrus crop on Friday.
So far the projections haven’t changed much since they were issued in October. The government then predicted the Sunshine State would harvest 168 million boxes of oranges, each of which weighs 90 pounds. As of last month that number inched up by 500,000.
Florida is by far the nation’s largest supplier of oranges. If projections hold, this would be the largest crop in four years, since two heavy hurricane seasons devastated growers by damaging trees and spreading crop diseases.
