Expert Predict Slow Citrus Season for Texas

RIO GRANDE VALLEY- Experts predict this year’s citrus crop could already be doomed and the season just started.
Ray Prewett works with Texas Citrus Mutual. He tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS the crops are expected to be down slightly from last year and Texas may not dominate the national market.
“Nine million cartons of grapefruit and four million cartons of oranges, isn’t enough to stay competitive.” Prewett said.
Prewett says Texas may be small when it comes to crops but it still has a big impact. He adds Florida pays a lot of attention to what happens in Texas.
Prewett says another thing citrus growers continue to fight off disease. The latest disease “citrus greening” and is headed towards the U.S. from Mexico. Prewett advice don’t bring citrus plants in from anywhere else.
