Anita Bryant Performs at Citrus Hall of Fame Gala
The Ledger – March 4, 2012
Entertainer Anita Bryant appeared and sang for an audience of about 100 people Saturday night at the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame Gala at Nora Mayo Hall in Winter Haven.
Bryant, the only living female member of the Citrus Hall, had backed out of Friday’s induction ceremony at Florida Southern College after the college received emails threatening a protest.
Bryant has been a political lightning rod since leading a successful 1977 referendum to overturn a Miami-Dade County ordinance outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Bryant told The Ledger she did not want to detract from honoring the three 2012 inductees, Avon Park grower Robert Barben, Lake Wales-based grower Frank Hunt II and Bernie Lester of Lakeland, the former head of the Florida Department of Citrus.
