Tropicana Unveils the First-of-Its-Kind Pitcher-Style Container

Lakeland Ledger – August 5, 2012

HAINES CITY | Officials at Bradenton-based Tropicana Products Inc., the leading U.S. orange juice seller, say they hope consumers will like their new 89-ounce Pure Premium OJ as much for the bottle as the juice.

“This sleek, first-of-its-kind package is ideal for any breakfast or brunch occasion because it offers orange juice lovers nutritional power from one of Mother Nature’s original super fruits with more convenience, easier handling and pouring, style and recyclability all in a family-size pitcher,” said spokesman Mike Torres in an email to The Ledger. “This is the first clear-handle design in the chilled juice category that is 100 percent recyclable.”

The pitcher design tested well with consumers before the PepsiCo Inc. subsidiary released it about a month ago, he said.

Tropicana’s marketing manager said consumers had their say.

“We listened closely to our consumers who said they prefer to see the juice and worked with our research team to marry the best of form and function,” said Jacqi Coleman in a press statement.

Gaining an advantage from packaging is hardly unprecedented in retail or even the intensely competitive U.S. orange juice market.

The Minute Maid brand, a subsidiary of Coca-Cola Co., introduced its Simply Orange not-from-concentrate OJ after Tropicana and Lake Wales-based Florida’s Natural Growers had long-established NFC products.

Simply Orange was an immediate hit as much because of its clear plastic carafe/bottle as the quality of the juice.

“The carafe was absolutely a game changer. Nobody else was doing something like that,” said Susan Stribling, a Coca-Cola spokeswoman.
