Budget-cutting on today’s Florida Legislature agenda
The News-Press – March 25, 2008
TALLAHASSEE — Florida legislators are returning for the fourth week of the 2008 legislative session, with budget-cutting on today’s agenda.
Lawmakers already trimmed more than a half-billion dollars from this year’s spending, as state tax collections have not lived up to the projections on which the budget is based. For the fiscal year starting July 1, they have about $3 billion more in spending cuts to consider.
Today’s agenda calls for the Senate general-government appropriations panel to go over budgets for some relatively small agencies. Those scheduled to explain their reduction plans, and plead to be spared the budget axe, in today’s meeting are the Departments of Agriculture, Business and Professional Regulation, Citrus, Environmental Protection, Financial Services, Lottery, Management Services and Revenue.
The Fish and wildlife Conservation Commission and Public Service commission are also on the agenda.
