Sheriff updating contact list of agriculture property owners

Orlando Sentinel – March 7, 2011

Lake County cattle owners, citrus growers and farmers take notice: The Sheriff’s Office wants to hear from you.

The Sheriff’s Office is compiling a contact list of ranch and grove land owners to be used for emergency purposes only and asks that those who are interested in being added call 352-343-2101.

The list comes in handy for deputies who answer calls ranging from escaped cattle blocking roadways to reports of industrial machinery theft, according to sheriff’s Capt. Todd Luce. None of the information provided will be made public and is only a “law-enforcement tool for public safety to benefit citizens,” he said.

The database currently lists 108 agriculture landowners and reduces the time and resources deputies spend when working on an emergency case. Those on the list can post signs stating no trespassing under protection of the Sheriff’s Office. The signs have a serial number deputies can use to quickly learn the name and contact information of the property owner in an emergency.
