Remembering E.T. York

A visionary and leader passed away this morning. Dr. E.T. York, the founder of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences— died after a long illness at the age of 88.

You can see York’s handiwork all over north central Florida.

York’s journey began in the southern Appalachian mountains. He worked to put himself through Auburn University in three years. After serving in WWII, York finished his masters at Auburn, and met his future wife Vam.

York was the youngest- ever administrator of the Federal Extension Service under President Kennedy. He became chancellor of the State University System, and UF Vice President for Agriculture, Executive Vice President, and interim President.

York led efforts to build the $4 million Hospice Hospital and Headquarters building, which bears his name.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Vam York, and a son and daughter.

The family will hold a private internment, but a public memorial service is scheduled for April 27th, at Trinity United Methodist church in Gainesville.
