Farm Bill
For 18 months, Florida Citrus Mutual was deeply involved in the creation and passage of the 2008 Farm Bill. Due in part to Mutual’s hard work, the bill includes significant successes for specialty crops like citrus that are outlined in the following white paper. A majority of these new programs (EQIP, WHIP, crop insurance, disaster assistance, etc.) are still in rule making. Once the rules are established, we anticipate there will be plenty of opportunities for Florida citrus growers. Through our involvement in the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance, a national lobbying group comprised mostly of fruit and vegetable organizations, Mutual is thoroughly analyzing the 15 Farm Bill titles, particularly the Research, Nutrition and Conservation titles, for programs that could assist Florida citrus growers. We are committed to providing accurate information on these programs regarding deadlines, eligibility and the application process as it becomes available. Check the Triangle newsletter, www.flcitrusmutual.com and Mutual membership e-mails for updates. Please do not hesitate to contact Mutual if you have any questions.
